On August 19, 2018, after a valiant ten year struggle with alzheimers, Edward L. "Sam" Sawyer, Sr. passed away peacefully in his sleep enroute to eternity. He was 88 years young.
He was born in the Red Level area of central Florida on October 9, 1929 and was the oldest son of David Russell Sawyer and Ruby Elliott Sawyer, both deceased. Although brothers David, Jr., Ulysses and Preston preceded him to the land of Kings, he is survived by brothers Daniel Sawyer of Inverness, FL, Willie C. Sawyer and Emmitt Sawyer of St. Petersburg, FL, Herman Sawyer of Memphis, TN, and sisters Wilhelmina (Sawyer) Pittman and Norma Dee (Sawyer) Williams of West Palm Beach, FL.
Sam, as he was affectionately known, met and married the ever beautiful Albula Frazier from Monticello, FL. Together they built both a community legacy and a loving family. Their children are: Horace James Sawyer (deceased) of Toledo, OH, Anita Ann Owens of Zephyrhills, FL, Kenisher Rose (Sawyer) Edwards of Crystal River, FL, Edward Lee "Saleem" Sawyer, Jr. of Beverly Hills, FL, Gregory Russell Sawyer of Virginia Beach, VA, Arelene Veronica Sawyer of Beverly Hills, FL, Douglas Louis Sawyer of Inverness, FL, Steven David Sawyer of Beverly Hills, FL, Jerry Lee Sawyer, Sr. of Crystal River, FL, Carustella (Sawyer) Glass of Citrus Springs, FL, Vicki Jeanette (Sawyer) Lindo of Ocala, FL, Cheryl Kay (Sawyer) Cooper of Crystal River, FL, and Michael Anthony Sawyer, Sr. of Columbia, SC. There are 42 grandchildren and an ever growing multitude of great-grandchildren.
Sam started his hospitality service career as a bellhop and chauffeur at the Port Paradise Hotel in Crystal River, FL. In 1966 he moved his family from Inverness to Crystal River. In 1967 he moved cross the canal to the Port Paradise Golf Hotel, which later became the Plantation Inn and Golf Resort. He spent the latter stage of his illustrious career working as a caddymaster at the Golf Resort. He retired in 2008 after more than 40 years of selfless and dedicated service. Quiet and unassuming, he had a larger-than-life presence to his friends, his co-workers and his family. He was a very proud Dad who loved his family immeasurably.. .and they loved him!.
This much loved son, brother, husband, father, uncle, grandfather, great grandfather, cousin, and friend will be truly missed
